What is a “district” in Detroit? What is a “neighborhood?” Informally, “neighborhood” and “district” are often interchangeable; more formally, and for official data collection and government agencies, districts in Detroit are more distinctly named. The El Moore is located in Midtown Detroit; is Midtown a neighborhood, an area, a district, or all of the above?
The City of Detroit legislative governing body, the City Council, has recently been divided into districts with each district having its own elected City Council representative. There are also two City Council members elected at-large. The El Moore is located in Detroit City Council District 5.
Detroit is historically also a city of neighborhoods, which are usually named geographically. Wikipedia has a somewhat comprehensive list of Detroit neighborhoods, but there are many that are not listed. Model D Media, an online weekly publication, also reports on regularly on Detroit neighborhoods, which are grouped in larger clusters.
The term “district” can mean so many different things to different people that it just might make more sense to decide for yourself or your specific purpose what kind of “district” you are looking for.

For Detroit, there are many choices in how a particular area is defined. One thing hasn’t changed though: you’re either an Eastside or a Westsider depending on which side of Woodward you live. If you’re staying at the El Moore, you are definitely a “Westsider”!
